GK900M AC Drive for Mechatrolink-III CNC Systems

With the continuous development of advanced CNC machining and industrial automation, high-speed communication between CNC systems and spindle drives has become increasingly important for precision machining, multi-axis coordination, and efficient machine operation.

Traditional CNC systems commonly rely on analog signals and pulse signals for control. Although these methods can transmit basic speed, position, or start-stop commands, they can involve limitations in transmission speed, data integration, debugging, and system maintenance. As CNC machine tools move toward higher precision and more integrated control architectures, industrial Ethernet communication has become an important solution for connecting CNC controllers with AC drives, spindle servo drives, and other motion-control components.

To meet these requirements, GTAKE developed the MIII bus communication solution based on the GK900M Series Spindle Servo Drive and CM33 MIII communication expansion card. The solution enables high-speed AC drive communication between the CNC system and spindle drive, supporting real-time transmission of position, speed, torque, motor status, and encoder feedback data.

The solution is designed for CNC machine tools that require synchronized spindle control, fast communication response, and reliable industrial Ethernet integration.

MIII Bus Communication Control Scheme

MIII bus communication, whose full name is Mechatrolink-III (MIII) bus communication, provides high-speed data transmission, real-time communication, and synchronization performance for CNC automation systems.

In a CNC machine, the spindle drive receives control commands from the CNC system and converts them into corresponding motor control actions. Compared with basic analog or pulse communication, an industrial Ethernet-based architecture can transmit different types of control and feedback data through the same communication system.

The MIII communication protocol supports switching between position, speed, and torque control modes within a single frame of data transmission. It can also transmit motor status information and encoder feedback in real time, helping meet the control requirements of multi-axis CNC machining.

The GTAKE MIII bus communication control scheme consists of the GK900M Series Spindle Servo Drive and CM33 MIII communication expansion card. The CM33 provides the communication interface between the CNC system and the GK900M AC Drives solution, creating an integrated AC motor drive communication architecture for CNC spindle control.

The typical communication structure can be understood as:

CNC System → Mechatrolink-III / MIII Bus → CM33 Communication Card → GK900M Spindle Servo Drive → Spindle Motor

This architecture allows the GK900M AC Drive to participate directly in CNC control and receive synchronized commands while transmitting spindle operating and encoder feedback information back to the CNC system.

Scheme effect

The GTAKE MIII bus communication solution provides the following benefits for CNC machine applications:

  • High-speed: The communication system provides a transmission rate of 100 Mbps and short communication delays, with a minimum communication cycle of 250 μs. This supports high-speed command and feedback transmission between the CNC system and spindle servo drive.
  • Real-time control: Position, speed, and torque control modes can be switched through bus communication, while motor status and encoder feedback can be transmitted synchronously. This supports coordinated control requirements for CNC machining.
  • Easy maintenance: The CM33 communication card comes standard with two RJ45 interfaces, including one input and one output, with a built-in simple switch function. This simplifies network connection and maintenance of the AC motor drive controller system.
  • High reliability: The MIII communication architecture provides reliable data transmission and strong anti-interference capability for industrial CNC environments, supporting stable operation of the GK900M Series Spindle Servo Drive.

GK900M Spindle Servo Drive and CNC System Integration

The communication architecture connects the CNC controller, MIII bus, communication expansion card, GK900M Series Spindle Servo Drive, and spindle motor into one coordinated control system.

The CNC system sends control commands through Mechatrolink-III, while the AC motor drive receives the corresponding data and controls spindle operation. At the same time, motor status and encoder feedback can be transmitted through the communication network for CNC system monitoring and coordinated control.

This integrated structure reduces the dependence on separate analog and pulse signal interfaces and provides a more centralized communication method for CNC spindle applications.

For machine builders and CNC system integrators, this approach can simplify the implementation of AC drive motor control, particularly where high-speed communication and synchronized control are required.

Advantages of Mechatrolink-III Communication for CNC Spindle Control

Mechatrolink-III provides an industrial Ethernet communication approach for motion and machine control applications. In the GTAKE MIII solution, the communication architecture supports the transmission of multiple types of control and feedback data between the CNC system and the spindle drive.

For GK900M AC Drives, the key application benefits include:

Position, speed, and torque control

Multiple control modes can be exchanged through the communication system, supporting different CNC spindle operating requirements.

Encoder feedback

Real-time encoder feedback can be transmitted to the CNC system, supporting closed-loop spindle control and monitoring.

High-speed communication

The 100 Mbps transmission rate and minimum 250 μs communication cycle support fast data exchange between the CNC system and spindle drive.

Synchronized machining

Real-time data communication helps CNC systems coordinate spindle operation with other machine axes during multi-axis machining.
