Application Case of GK620 Frequency Inverter in Rice Huller Rubber Roller Drive System

A rice huller is a grain processing machine used to remove the husk of paddy rice and produce brown rice. Its purpose is to strip the outer husk while minimizing grain breakage and surface damage to maintain as much kernel integrity as possible.

The rubber roller assembly is the core transmission mechanism of a rice huller and plays a decisive role in the dehusking process. The working principle is that two rubber rollers rotate in opposite directions at different speeds, creating squeezing and tearing forces as the grain passes between them, effectively removing the husk.

GTAKE’s control solution

Rubber Roller Control Solution

Rice hullers typically adopt a dual-speed roller drive system, where one motor drives both the fixed and moving rollers at different speeds. This ensures a stable dehusking rate while reducing operator workload.

The rubber roller and related mechanical components have high rotational inertia. Therefore, rapid energy dissipation must be considered during fast stop or emergency stop conditions. A common DC bus configuration is highly suitable for this scenario. The technological process of a rice huller generally includes feeding and flow control, dehusking, separation of mixture materials, husk extraction by airflow, and final discharge.

Among these steps, dehusking is the most critical stage—when paddy rice enters the nip between the fast and slow rollers, the linear speed difference generates strong tearing force. Under the combined effect of this force and roller pressure (applied by pneumatic or spring mechanisms), the husk is torn and removed, outputting a mixture of brown rice, partially hulled grains, broken husks, and a small amount of bran.

GTAKE’s control solution for rice huller rubber rollers is composed of two GK620 frequency inverters sharing a common DC bus, motors, an HMI, and PROFINET industrial communication. The control system topology is shown on the left.

Solution Benefits

  • Stable and Efficient Operation
Compared with traditional mechanical dehusking, the motor-driven rubber roller system significantly improves service life of key components and enhances hulling efficiency. Grain breakage and chalkiness are reduced, resulting in a noticeably higher actual rice yield.
  • Precise Processing Control
Traditional systems rely on manual parameter adjustment and operator experience. This solution introduces recipe-based control via HMI, achieving precise process management, reducing operator workload, and supporting remote monitoring and maintenance.
  • Energy Saving and Consumption Reduction
Due to the speed difference between the two rollers, mechanical resistance creates a “tug-of-war” effect in conventional systems. With GTAKE’s common DC bus design, regenerative energy from this interaction is effectively absorbed and re-utilized, achieving significant energy savings.
